Living With Psoriasis

An Overview of Psoriasis

Welcome to my site. Here you will find resources about psoriasis and related skin conditions. Living with these conditions can be a challenge.

Be assured I will do my best to keep up-dated with the latest research and medical findings.

This will include treatments, triggers and other relevant tips for those living with this condition.

Different products will be discussed and also their effectiveness with specific skin conditions.

What Is It?

This is an inflammatory skin disease and can be both debilitating and distressing.

It is an auto-immune chronic condition that ranges in severity from mild to chronic.

Affects and Coping Strategies:

This can affect the whole family and support is needed when a diagnosis is initially made.

When flare-ups occur and at other times remission happens; there will be different reactions.

The person with this condition will have their own coping mechanisms.

5 Types of Psoriasis:

  1. Erythrodermic
  2. Guttate
  3. Inverse
  4. Plaque
  5. Pustular

The most common type is plaque psoriasis; also known as psoriasis vulgaris. The good news is it is not contagious. And more and more research is being done.

Other Conditions May Present:

This can present as minor localised patches to complete body coverage. About 10% of people with this condition also have psoriatic arthritis.

What Causes Psoriasis?

The jury is still out on the causes, but as more research is done, there are more findings being reported; which will hopefully also lead to effective treatment.

It is proving a challenge to treat and with the added motivation to find an effective solution to my own condition, I’m hoping this journey will not only help me, but many other sufferers will also be helped too.

The hypotheses of causes of psoriasis include being triggered by stress, chronic illness, genetics, injury, environmental triggers and withdrawal of specific medication.

The Challenges Faced:

A debilitating condition; this can affects a person’s self-esteem, social life and everyday living.

It can range from being hidden (mild on bodily parts not seen) to unsightly (chronic and seen).

Being told by the medical profession that there is no cure and with the effectiveness of treatments varying; many sufferers will lapse into depression and choose a life of social isolation.

Testimonials Welcome:

I have read many testimonials where patients claim to have found a “cure” and they re-tell their own stories of their journey through life with this condition.

The joy when they find something that has worked for them and their altered lifestyles; are both poignant and heart-warming.

Research Goes On:

However, medical practitioners are adamant that there is no known cure, although there can be long bouts of remission.

As the definitive causes of this skin disorder are still being researched; so too are the effectiveness of treatments that are being prescribed by medical practitioners the world over.

Individual Choices:

We are all individuals and hence specific treatment that works for one person may not necessarily work for another.

Trial and error is often the way psoriasis sufferers will go, until a treatment that suits them appears to “work”.

More Information Gathering:

I will be exploring each of the treatments I discover and look further into how they work and what makes one more effective over another. Each specific skin condition will be discussed in detail in other articles.

Hopefully as you explore the articles that will be published on this site, you will find information that you find helpful.

Different Topics To Be Explored:

Please check the different categories and more will continue to be added with regular updating of the latest research and treatments available.

Please note: It is always advisable to seek your health professional’s advice when starting or changing treatments. They will also confirm diagnosis.
